Construction
Walls, floor, ceiling, windows, doors, electrical points and plumbing create the physical room.
01 Scope
Shell · built-ins · furniture · personality
Before choosing furniture, understand what you are actually designing. A finished room contains several different layers with different lifespans, purposes and costs.
Each layer can improve the room. Each one should still earn its place.
02 Layers
Start by separating the room itself from what is built into it, what can move and what mainly adds comfort or personality.
Room count matters too. Repeating bedrooms, bathrooms or living areas repeats furniture, storage, lighting, curtains, installation and future maintenance. There is nothing wrong with completing the house in stages.
Walls, floor, ceiling, windows, doors, electrical points and plumbing create the physical room.
TV units, bed-back panels, vanities, built-in consoles and fixed storage become part of the room.
Sofas, beds, chairs, centre tables, ottomans and similar pieces support everyday activities.
Curtains, rugs, cushions, lamps, artwork and accessories add comfort and character without becoming the room itself.
03 Function
A complete interior does not mean every possible furniture category must be included. The interior starts with behaviour; furniture exists to support it.
Additional spending should improve something real: comfort, furniture quality, hardware, upholstery, planning, lighting, curtains, rugs or artwork. More interior is not automatically better interior.
Empty space is part of the design. People need room to walk, open drawers, pull chairs, operate wardrobe shutters, move luggage and clean.
What does this room need to support comfortably?
04 Check
A room is not incomplete simply because a styled reference contains more furniture. Complete the room around its purpose, circulation and daily use first.
Choose according to the room's actual use and available space.
