Waterproof the risk, not the label.

Waterproofing is often described as bathrooms only, bathrooms plus balconies, or bathrooms plus balconies and terrace. That can look like basic, better and best, but the building does not experience water in package names.

The right coverage depends on where water, weather and drainage create risk.

Principle

Drainage gets water away. Waterproofing keeps it from entering the construction layers while it is there.

02 Zones

Different wet areas fail in different ways.

The waterproofing scope has to respond to exposure, geometry, drainage, junctions and penetrations in each area.

Bathroom

Direct internal water

Shower floors, wall-floor junctions, drains, pipe penetrations and wet walls are vulnerable. The objective is not merely to stop a stain below; it is to prevent water entering the construction layers in the first place.

Balcony

Rain meets the interior edge

Balconies face rain, temperature changes, external edges, drains and thresholds. Slope, drain position, door threshold and waterproofing upturn must work together so outside water does not travel inside.

Terrace

A large exposed wet area

Terraces face direct sun, heavy rain, temperature movement and sometimes ponded water when drainage is poor. Waterproofing has to coordinate with slope, outlets, parapet junctions and pipe penetrations.

03 System

The field area is only as reliable as its weakest detail.

Basic chemical or cementitious systems can provide economical protection where the exposure and specification suit them. They still depend on the correct substrate, adequate coverage, continuity, corners, curing or application requirements, and protection before finishes.

Advanced flexible systems may better accommodate small movements or more demanding exposure, but a more expensive chemical does not replace detailing. Membrane systems create a distinct waterproof barrier, yet introduce laps, terminations, penetrations and protection layers of their own.

The centre of a waterproof layer may be perfect while one pipe, corner or outlet fails. Waterproofing can fail locally while water damage spreads far beyond that point.

Test before covering
Was the entire water path resolved and inspected before the waterproof layer disappeared?
  • Prepare the base; dust, loose material and poor surfaces matter.
  • Detail floor-wall junctions, pipes, drains, thresholds, outlets and parapets deliberately.
  • Verify slope so water reaches the intended outlet instead of sitting on the surface.
  • Where applicable, waterproof, test, correct defects and protect the layer before tiling or finishing.
  • Protect completed waterproofing from later trades that could puncture or damage it.

04 Check

Coverage alone does not prove waterproofing will work.

β€œWe waterproofed the terrace” is not enough information. The slope, outlets, parapets, pipe penetrations, continuity, later damage and testing all still matter.

A waterproof terrace still needs to drain, and expensive finishes should not hide untested work.
