01 Problem
Storage Β· services Β· proportion Β· restraint
Permanent joinery should solve a clear job. It may provide storage, support a TV, conceal cables, organise lighting, improve proportion or intentionally create a visual feature.
If none of those jobs exist, leaving part of the wall quiet can be the better design decision.
Permanent joinery should solve storage, services, proportion or a clear visual purpose.
02 Options
A simple TV wall with a clean cabinet can already resolve equipment, cables and storage. Decorative panels can add material, depth, lighting or proportion where those additions support the room.
Full-wall panelling can create continuity, warmth or concealed doors, but it also introduces more joints, more cost, more maintenance and less visual quiet.
Bed-back walls and console units follow the same rule: their size and depth should respond to the room rather than simply filling available wall area.
A clean wall and serviceable cabinet can organise equipment, devices, cables and everyday storage without covering the entire elevation.
Simple can still be highly resolved.A panel can introduce depth, finish, integrated lighting or cable concealment when it relates to the TV size, console and wall proportions.
The panel should belong to the composition.Useful where the design intentionally needs hidden doors, continuous material or a strong architectural wall treatment.
More surface also means more joints and maintenance.Bed-back walls should align with the bed. Console depth should be checked against passage width and circulation.
Furniture depth consumes real space.03 Scope
TV walls may need power, HDMI or data cables, speaker wiring, routers, set-top boxes and other equipment. These can be concealed, but concealment should not remove future service access.
Electronics also generate heat. A clean enclosed cabinet can become a problem if there is no equipment clearance, ventilation or removable access panel.
Material choice should also remain disciplined. Wood, stone, mirror, metal, fabric and fluting can all be valid materials, but combining more of them does not automatically create a richer design.
Hide the cable. Do not hide the ability to service the cable.
What job is this joinery solving, and can every hidden system still be accessed afterwards?
04 Check
Select every condition that justifies or protects a permanent wall feature.
A wall can remain visually quiet. Filling empty space is not, by itself, a functional requirement.
Choose only the conditions that give the permanent joinery a clear and workable purpose.
